Some of the best college football teams in the nation reside in the Southeastern Conference. Former SEC standout and National Champion quarterback Greg McElroy agrees with that assessment. McElroy also believes one team has the talent but isn’t quite getting the hype they should: Mizzou.
Missouri had an outstanding 2023 season. They performed mightily above expectations, so naturally, that meant a trip to the Cotton Bowl (Seemingly every great Mizzou football season since 2007 has led to a Cotton Bowl berth). The Tigers defeated Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl, one of the biggest wins in program history.
Mizzou brings back Brady Cook and the great Luther Burden III, and that, combined with other talent on the team, makes them a threat. But they aren’t quite getting the attention they’ve earned, McElroy argued on Always College Football.
“Currently, if you were to ask a bunch of people that are going to prognosticate on what the preseason rankings will look like, I think a lot of people have Missouri, probably within striking distance of the Top 10,” he said via On3.com. McElroy praised Mizzou, rattling off their talent while being sure to note that the defense could become an issue.
Still, McElroy is right that Mizzou is a talented team that could make noise this year. The expanded playoff means more spots are up for grabs. Mizzou has a favorable schedule and, with the right mix, could grab an at-large bid to the inaugural 12-team CFP.
