One of the benefits of the new 12-team College Football Playoff is that it presents a new opportunity for a team like the Missouri Tigers. While Mizzou has often been good to very good, it would have been unexpected for them to be one of the four best teams in the nation and make the previous four-team Playoff.

Mizzou had a strong season last year, going 11-2 and ending their season with a Cotton Bowl victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes.

The Tigers lost a couple of key starters to graduation and the NFL Draft, but quarterback Brady Cook and wide receiver Luther Burden, perhaps the nation’s best at the position, are back for another year. Speaking at the Manning Passing Academy this week, Cook was sure to point out that he’s aware of what’s at stake this season.

“I think everybody in this area is excited. I think the standard and the expectation is higher than ever. And that’s what we want. You know, that’s why we worked so hard. You want that standard to be high so you can go meet it, you can go exceed it. We’re excited to go do it,” Cook said via On3.

The quarterback set career highs in passing yards and passing touchdowns last season while establishing a new career-low in interceptions. If he can put up similar numbers or eclipse those, Mizzou will be looking at one of the most successful seasons in school history.
