It doesn’t matter if the baseball season is underway or not, Baltimore Orioles owner Peter Angelos is cheering for Showalter.
Yes, we know of manager Buck Showalter, but he’s not the only mammal of his namesake competing for the Orioles owners attention – Angelos has a horse named Showalter, and he’s pretty damn impressive.
As Alexander Pyles of the Baltimore Sun reports, a 2-year-old horse bred and owned by Angelos won his first professional race with a 1st place finish after a neck-on-neck finish over Hennessy Fire at Laurel Park. It was this close.

Here’s video of the photo finish.
Angelos should give Showalter all of the horse treats he wants, as the victory came with a $29,640 prize. Not bad for just over a minute worth of race. As Lyles points out, Showalter isn’t the first horse named after a Baltimore Oriole who’s won at Laurel Park, as Markakis accomplished the feat in 2014.
Hopefully, Showalter doesn’t start bucking as that can be dangerous.
*crickets*
Perhaps Showalter’s victory will inspire his human counterpart, and help rally the Orioles after their subpar 2015 season which saw them finish with an 81-81 record. Crazier things have happened.
