When the PGA of America announced who would be leading the U.S. in next year’s Ryder Cup, it stunned a lot of people. That includes those on the European team like Rory McIlroy.
McIlroy led his team to a stunning upset of the U.S. last year, so when he heard Keegan Bradley would be leading the squad next year, he was in disbelief.
“I think it has come as a surprise for everyone,” said the four-time major champion. “We had dinner in London on Sunday night with Luke [Donald, the European captain], and he told us then. I think disbelief, probably. I think Keegan was probably in disbelief, at some point, too, but it’s certainly an interesting pick.
“It’s an interesting appointment. The youngest captain since Arnold Palmer I think was a playing captain at 34. But he knows Bethpage very well. He went to university in the area. He’s obviously very passionate about the Ryder Cup. It’s certainly a departure from what the US has done over the last few years, and time will tell if that’s a good thing or not.”
Maybe McIlroy is shocked because, like many, he thought good friend Tiger Woods would take over as team captain, especially since Woods has expressed interest in the position. However, Woods has a busy schedule and doesn’t have time, at least not right now, to be Ryder Cup captain.
