Dwight Howard has fired longtime agent Dan Fegan, according to USA Today.
“As I continue to embark on my NBA journey, I have decided to sever my relationship with Dan Fegan and Relativity Sports,” Howard said in a statement. “I have the utmost respect for Dan, but this is the right decision for me. My sole focus remains working with my teammates to position the Rockets for a pursuit of a championship. I wish Dan and the team at Relativity all the best in the future.”
Fegan is one of the NBA’s most powerful agents, but he’s had a rough year. He was fired by DeAndre Jordan in September after Jordan’s tumultuous free agency and by John Wall in January.
Howard’s agent change (we don’t know who he will hire to replace Fegan) comes at a critical moment in his career. The eight-time All-Star plans to opt out of his contract this summer and pursue a max deal while he still can. At 30 years old, Howard has declined since his All-NBA prime but still averaged 14.6 points per game and ranks third in the NBA in both field goal percentage (61.4) and rebounds (12).
Losing Howard is a big blow for Fegan, whose reputation as an NBA super-agent won’t be able to withstand too many more defections. With Jordan, Howard and Wall gone, DeMarcus Cousins is Fegan’s only marquee client. Meanwhile guys like Rich Paul (Wall, LeBron James), Thad Foucher (Anthony Davis, Russell Westbrook) and even Jay-Z and company (Kevin Durant) are emerging forces in NBA player representation.
