While last month’s announcement of Coldplay as the musical halftime act for Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara didn’t necessarily excite America, the latest news might. The NFL is apparently tapping previous Super Bowl halftime acts to join Coldplay for the February 7 Big Game on CBS.
Entertainnent Tonight reports that none other than Super Bowl XLVII act Beyoncé will join Coldplay to perform “Hymn for the Weekend” on which the two acts teamed up for the group’s album “A Head Full of Dreams.” Beyoncé’s performance in New Orleans in Super Bowl XLVII brought back Destiny’s Child. And that’s not all. ET says Bruno Mars will also join Coldplay sometime during the Super Bowl 50 show. Mars was the headliner for the Super Bowl XLVIII show in New Jersey in 2014.
So in addition to Coldplay, the Super Bowl and sponsor Pepsi are hoping that the buzz over Beyoncé and Brono Mars will offset any lack of enthusiasm for the band fronted by Chris Martin.
It’s expected that there will be at least one more musical act that will be part of the halftime show. Whether it will be another previous Super Bowl performer or a totally new one is anyone’s guess. The potential for Weird Al Yankovic or Metallica is probably low, although you never know at this point.
