Star Trek teaser

The trailer for Star Trek Beyond dropped today, and if it’s any indication, the series seems to be returning to its roots.

The first two J.J Abrams directed Star Trek reboots were both fine films, but they sit largely in the bad books of Trekkies for the lack of original Star Trek themes and ideas – such as an absence of deep space exploration, politics, and the whole Khan reveal in Into Darkness.

This trailer, while carrying over the Beastie Boys music from Star Trek (2009), looks to be both a continuation and a steer into a more Star Trek friendly universe. In the trailer, the Enterprise crew seem to be stranded on a foreign planet, run into a new set of aliens, and get into some space shenanigans. I would have enjoyed this trailer solely from Karl Urban quipping as McCoy.

Star Trek Into Darkness felt like it was a sci-fi film trying to throw Star Trek lore (Khan, the scream, ect, ect) in for geek cred, which backfired, while this seems to be creating a whole new original story with the universe’s characters. Now it’s just a trailer, so take that with a Narada-sized grain of salt.

Star Trek Beyond is written by Simon Pegg (who plays Scotty and is a huge Trekkie) and directed by Justin Lin, who directed four of the Fast and the Furious films – which is why this film seems action packed. Sofia Boutella is the unknown alien shown on screen while Idris Elba is set to play the villain in the film (Twitter is speculating he’s playing Jem’Hadar, but there’s no official word that’s him).

Paramount was reportedly intending to release the trailer paired with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but it leaked online which prompted them to release it in full today.

The trailer hits a middle ground which should please both newer fans and the Trekkies alike.
